Accelerated Studies

NYU encourages all students to chart their educational plans with care and precision. For most students, this will resemble a traditional model, four years for an undergraduate program and an additional 1-to 4 years for those pursuing a graduate program. Many students, however, will choose to finish their degrees in less than the traditional time because it makes the best educational, professional, and financial sense for them.

NYU has put in place resources to help these students—undergraduates and graduates—map pathways that take full advantage of what NYU has to offer: study away at global sites, internship opportunities, and honors programs. It is not for everyone. However, nearly 20 percent of NYU students already complete their undergraduate degrees in less than four years. The savings, both in money and time, are considerable, without taking away from the student experience.

Schools and Colleges

Whether students are beginning their undergraduate education and pursuing a strong liberal arts foundation or seeking an advanced degree with a professional focus, the University’s schools and colleges adhere to the highest standard of academic enterprise and innovation.  A leading research institution and a truly global university, NYU is working towards becoming the future of idea capital.  As such, the University’s schools, colleges, and degree-granting campuses offer a diverse spectrum of undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and specialized degree programs. Browse the descriptions of the schools and colleges below to get a brief introduction to the kinds of programs they offer, and access their websites for more details on courses, paths of study, missions, and visions.

Arts & Science

Arts & Science is the founding school and academic heart of New York University, comprising the College of Arts & Science, the Graduate School of Arts & Science, and Liberal Studies. Areas of study and research span science, the social sciences, and the humanities. Arts & Science faculty – the recipients of major recognitions from the Nobel Prize to the Emmy Award – teach across this integrated community of scholars, educators, and lifelong learners. Expansive global programs include First Year Away, junior year abroad for GLS students, and joint Ph.D. programs with NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai. We invite you to explore Arts & Science: a community working together to imagine, discover, and create a world where we all thrive.

Studying Abroad

Global Notebook is a biannual online magazine for students who are considering studying abroad. Explore content on the unique academic offerings in the global curriculum, get to know our communities through staff and faculty stories, and see the many ways students stay engaged outside of the classroom while studying abroad.

Continuing Education

From pursuing degrees and certificates for career advancement to meeting a profession’s continuing education requirements to attending liberal arts courses to fulfill one’s love of knowledge, learning is a life-long endeavor.  Continuing education at NYU links directly to the principles of NYU’s founding, with its emphasis on providing a “rational and practical education fitting for all and graciously open to all.

Libraries

Great libraries are essential to great universities. They support and empower scholarship and research innovation. The NYU Division of Libraries is an 8-library, 6 million-volume system that continually enhances its on-site and online services and resources for students and faculty and expands its research collections in all formats, from paper to electronic and multimedia. NYU Libraries provides students and faculty with access to the world’s scholarship; its resources and services are central to the University community’s intellectual life.

The system’s flagship is the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, which houses millions of volumes, 53,320 serial titles, and over 43,000 linear feet of archives. The Libraries catalog also provides NYU’s global community with access to thousands of electronic resources. Bobst Library receives 10,000 visits per day and circulates 159,000 items annually.

Within Bobst is the Special Collections Center, which houses the Fales Collections of literature, food studies, and New York City avant-garde culture; and the Tamiment Library/Wagner Labor Archives, internationally known and uniquely strong in the history of left politics, labor, and social protest movements. Bobst Library also contains the Avery Fisher Center for Music and Media; specialized services to assist students and faculty with digital projects and data collection/statistical computing; the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation and Conservation Department for the care of special collections materials in formats ranging from papyrus to film and tape; and more than 2,600 seats for study and computing.

Centers and Institutes

One of New York University’s strengths is its vast array of institutes and centers that are not only an important part of the academic setting of the University but are also a vital part of its cultural setting. From leading international centers for research and education to one of the most technologically advanced lecture halls and screening facilities in New York City, the varied institutes and centers at NYU serve as critical points of convergence for the University experience.

Throughout the year, many of them offer lectures and seminars that are open to the entire University community allowing for enrichment in many different subjects.

Safety, Health, and Wellness

In the midst of New York City, NYU students are truly part of the tempo and excitement of Greenwich Village and beyond. To maintain the health and well-being of the student body, students in degree-granting programs must maintain health insurance. Many automatically enroll in an NYU-sponsored student health insurance plan as part of the University’s registration process. Students may also opt to maintain their own health insurance and waive the NYU Plan, and they have the option of enrolling in Stu-Dent, the student dental plan.
